Caps and Overages

TekSavvy offers both unlimited and, at a lower price, capped packages. Uploads, and downloads during the overnight 2-8 a.m. period, are unlimited on all packages. But downloads outside the overnight period will, for capped plans, attract overage charges once you exceed the cap you’ve bought.

These caps are calculated based on the calendar month (1-31), and are charged as follows:

Monthly timing: Overage charges are based on the calendar month. But they are charged, after the fact, on the following invoice. The billing cycle for those postpaid overage charges is therefore different than the billing cycle for Internet service itself. The Internet service itself is prepaid, is billed on a cycle that is based on when you subscribed – which often isn’t the first of the month – and is issued five days before the next cycle. Put all that together, and for some accounts whose invoices are generated close to the end of the calendar month, post-paid overage charges may appear on the invoice for two pre-paid periods after usage.

Alerts: You can monitor usage on your account, using the MyAccount customer portal; or via email alerts sent to you when you hit 50, 75, 90, 100, and 110 percent of your cap. Now, your MyAccount usage statistics and email alerts are updated and sent only at the end of each day – they don’t reflect your real-time usage. So, if you’re having a download-heavy day, consider checking MyAccount to see what your usage was when the day started, and plan accordingly.

Avoiding charges: There is a cap of either 25 or 50 dollars on your overage, no matter how much you use. But, instead, you can also avoid the cap by going unlimited – and, if you do it in the month during which you go over, you’ll avoid the overage charges entirely. Here’s how.

If you increase or eliminate your bandwidth cap before the 28th of the calendar month, we will apply that change to the current month’s usage—so, instead of overage, we’ll charge you the difference between the two plans. If you up your plan on the 29th, 30th, or 31st, though, the change will apply only starting the subsequent month: the current month will still incur overage charges.

How will I know when I am over?
We’ve provided a couple of options for you to monitor your usage:

  1. Log into MyAccount to check your overage at any time. Usage is updated in MyAccount at the end of each day.
  2. We will send email notifications, to the billing email account on file, that you are approaching the bandwidth limit of your chosen service package. These notifications will be sent as your account hits the following thresholds: 50, 75, 90, and 100 percent. An additional notification is sent when your account hits 110 percent of your bandwidth limit. Usage notification emails are sent at the end of the day, so notifications do not reflect your real-time usage. Email notifications let you know that usage on the previous day exceeded one of the thresholds. If your usage exceeds more than one threshold in a day (e.g. 75, 90, and 100 percent), you will receive an email at the end of the day notifying you that you exceeded the latter threshold (e.g. 100 percent).

Does upload count toward my total usage?
No, only downloading counts towards your usage total.

Is there still unlimited downloading available from 2am to 8am?
Yes. Downloads during these hours do not count towards the bandwidth limit on capped plans.
